Sanmenxia Naturel Resources Introduction

        Following construction of Sanmenia(Three-Gate Gorge)Dam,the first of its kind built on the yellow River,Sanmenxia,a new and developing city,arose in the year of 1957,The city has under its jurisdiction three counties(shanxian,mianchi and lushi),two cities(lingbao and yima)and one distryct(hubin district),with a total area of 10,490 square kilometres and a population of 2.15 million,through more than forty years’ construction, sanmenxia is standing alojt in a new gesture,on western border area of henan province,It is called a shining pearl on the yellow river.               

        The city of sanmenxia is situated in the western border of henan province at the junction of henan,shanxi,and shaanxi provinces,it is one of the birthplace of the chinese nation,as early as half a million years ago,there left footmarks kf chinese ancestors,five or six thousand years ago there dwelt large groups of people in the area and from the 21^st century to the 13^th centruy bc,the area was the center   under the rule of the Xia and Shang Dynasties In the West Dynasty it was a part of guoguo state;during the rein of qin state,there established sanchuan prefectute;in the time kf hanwu emperor,there .    establinshed hongnu  prefecture and in north wei,there set up shanzhou prefecture,which was lasting up to ming and ping

      Sanmenxia city has advanced and convenient transportaion and communication facilties,the long hai railway runs through the city from east to west;the two state highways,namely No.310 and No.209,are intersected here ;ships can reach tongguan,shaanxi province by the yellow river;the express highway from luoyang to lingbao is under construction,and highways between the counties have been connected into a network.       
     Sanmenxia is mostly abundant in mineral resources,in the city area,as manyas 57 minerals have been discovered,accounting for 60 per cent of the provincial total,of them 34 minerals have been verified to be worth exploitation;23 minerals have been exploited and utilized,mainly,gold,aluminum and coal,both gold reserve and production occupy the second place in the country seventeen minerals including bauxite ,coal,zinc,antimony,pyrites,glass quartzite,moulding sand and arsenic occupy the first place in the province;nine others including molybdnum,uranium,lead,silver,phosphorus,piezocrystal,smelting crystal and graphite stand the second place. these minerals,are not only large in deposits,high in grade,fine in quality,but also highly concentyated in allocation,close to the groun d,easy to mine ,many of them being inter-growth or associated-growth,so that it is convenient to exploit and utilize them in a comprehensive,way.This area can be called an inportant development base of noble metals and energy resoruces in henan province and even in the country.

        Sanmenxia has varieties of special local products,which,are fine in quality,widely dispersed,and have a long history.the apples mainly produced in lingbao are famous both at home and abroad;its chinese date has long been renowned.the apricots of yandshao,mianchi county,is unique of its kind in the country,while the ox-heart persimmon here used to be a tribute to the court in antient times,the edible fungi,mushrooms,hedgehog hy dnum,walnut,chestnut,haw,and macaque’s peach produced in lushi are famous throughout the country the mountain area in sanmenxia has a name of “a natural storehouse of chinese medicine”and “one step with three medical herbs”.the xiaoshan tobacco leaves have awards for 10 consecutive years and are known as “substitute for yunnan tobacco”.

        Since 1986,when sanmenxia was upgraded to a prefecture-level city,its economic construction has developed rapidly.Now,the pattern of industrial structure,with energy,metallurgy,building materials,chemicals,medicine,and farm produce and side-line products as the six mainstays,has formed,the activities in commerce and trade are very active.agriculture,forestry,fruit,tobacco and animal husbandry are all in rapid development,the city’scnefor1998reachde14.43 billion yuan,while the fiscal income was 675 million yuan.

        The city proper of sanmenxia is located by the yellow river,Being at the foot of hills and beside waters and scattered in order,the city has a picturesque scenery and beautiful environment.Through scientific planning,and implementation of projects of afforestation,beautification and illuminatyon,the construction of the city’s basic facilities has greatyl caaelerated its speed,every service function has been obvionsly strengthened the area completed in constyuction Within the city proper has amounted to 24.4 square km.with a population up to 235,800.
